Help Opera on the James Grow with our Turn Up The Lights Campaign
This is a unique moment in our history. In 2017 we engaged community members in a conversation around their hopes for Opera on the James. Having identified key areas of growth, the board of directors has decided to ask the community to support a $2 million campaign. We started fundraising in June 2018 with a “quiet phase”, and have already raised over $500,000. We started our public phase in November with an exciting opportunity: every dollar that we raise from new donors or previous donors who have not given to us for at least five years will be matched, dollar for dollar, by Bob and Polly Garbee of Lynchburg. Their dollars will be placed in a new endowment for our benefit at the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation, and our new and returning donors may give to the endowment, to our board-controlled investment fund, or to both. Campaign pledges may be paid over a period up to five years. Please contact campaign chair David Neumeyer, 434-238-2222, for more information or to get involved. We invite you to help us Turn Up The Lights.
Ticket sales cover only one-quarter of production expenses, we need your financial support to produce this year’s season of opera. Opera is an expensive art form and we rely on your support to meet our budget each year.

YOUNG ARTIST SPONSOR
The Tyler Young Artist Program brings four emerging professionals and a master coach to Lynchburg for four weeks twice a season. These artists perform supporting roles in the mainstage operas, lead roles in family-oriented operas, Free Family Day and Central Virginia schools programs. They surprise and delight our local community and businesses with Random Acts of Culture – 10 to 30-minute pop-up performances. Sponsors underwrite professional training, travel, and a small stipend for the emerging opera singer during their residency.
EDUCATION AND PRODUCTION SPONSOR
Sponsors help bring our season to life. Sponsorship of a specific production, event, or learning and engagement program is an outstanding way to express your passion for opera or heighten your business’s visibility. Sponsorships offer a range of benefits including behind-the-scenes access to artists, recognition, special invitations to exclusive events, and much more.
The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation is a non-profit agency that manages endowments for community organizations. Opera on the James has an account, thanks to the generous donation of an early supporter and subsequent donors. You can add to the corpus and know that it will be there in perpetuity, producing unrestricted capital for the Opera’s use.
THANK YOU for considering how you can help Opera on the James continue to produce professional opera and serve our community! For additional information on how to make a gift or specific sponsorship opportunities, please contact the opera office 434.528.3397.
