The board of directors of Opera on the James voted in April 2010 to create a lasting memorial to Jane and Allen Tyler. Mr. and Mrs. Tyler were thoughtful and generous supporters of Opera on the James from its earliest days and we are pleased to honor them by naming the company’s newest initiative, The Jane and Allen Tyler Young Artist Program, in their name. The Jane and Allen Tyler Young Artist Program will make their names a part of opera history in this country: graduates of the Tyler Program will carry Jane and Allen’s name and legacy, on their resumes and in their memories, throughout their developing careers.
Young Artist Programs are the training ground and springboard for technically advanced artists who are vocally secure, dramatically strong, and are building the stamina and performance experience to sing on the world stage. The Jane and Allen Tyler Young Artist Program will identify and bring emerging professional opera singers and vocal coaches to central Virginia to be ambassadors for the fine arts and share their love of opera with audiences of all ages.
The Jane and Allen Tyler Young Artists will be the education and outreach team that provides thousands of people with the opportunity to explore their connection to one or more facets of this wonderful art form. Whether performing on the main stage, in community venues, for children and youth in schools, or for families experiencing music together, the Young Artists will share not only their passion for the fine arts, but that of the Tylers and other donors as well. An in-depth education program will support the performances, including Teacher Workshops, student attendance at main stage opera dress rehearsals, lectures, study guides for all ages, and many web resources available at www.operaonthejames.org.
Four emerging professional singers and a pianist will be chosen in auditions in Lynchburg and New York City in fall 2010 and participate in company activities in Spring 2011. The singers will receive training and perform supporting roles in Opera on the James’ spring production, refining their vocal and acting skills. At the same time, they will be giving interactive performances at community venues and schools. We will also offer the artists exposure to the business side of the arts world in cooperation with the Arts Management Program at Sweet Briar College.
Check the Opera on the James calendar for information on the Tyler Young Artist Program performances in March and April 2011.
