Roméo et Juliette: Synopsis: Act 3Act IIIScene 1: Friar Laurence's Cell (9 Minutes)Dawn is breaking when Romeo hastens to meet Juliette in Friar Laurence's bleak cell. In spite of their family feud, the ancient monk promises to unite the lovers. Kneeling before him, with the nurse Gertrude for witness, they pledge their marriage vows under his solemn blessing. Scene 2: A Street (20 Minutes)Romeo's page Stefano seeks his master near the palace of the Capulets, and sings an impudent song which rouses the household. Angry at the noise that has wakened him, Gregorio rushes out to put an end to the impertinence with his sword. Mercutio finds them fencing and blames the Capulet retainer for drawing on a mere boy. At this Tybalt breaks in, engaging Mercutio until Romeo arrives in time to separate them. Even the insults of Capulet's nephew cannot, however, persuade Romeo to fight. He will not take offense at any kinsman of his beloved. Only when Mercutio resumes the quarrel and is desperately wounded by Tybalt, does Romeo fling his scruples aside and avenge the murder of his friend. Meanwhile a crowd of both factions has gathered, shouting curses at each other. Count Capulet himself emerges from his palace in time to see Tybalt fall before Romeo's sword. Cries of vengeance rise on all sides. The Duke of Verona makes an impressive entrance, demands an oath of fealty, and banishes the wretched Romeo. |
