Prologue (6 minutes)

A brief orchestral introduction sounds a somber martial theme followed by a vigorous fugato.

The curtain rises, disclosing the entire cast assembled on the darkened stage. In a brief commentary on the feud between the Capulets and Montagues of Verona , they chant of the tragic love of Romeo and Juliette.
