For the benefit of those who cannot walk easily from the Genworth Financial parking lot downhill to the Academy Warehouse Theater, Opera on the James has arranged for the city transit company to have a shuttle bus running continuously from the Genworth parking lot to the lower door of the AFA Warehouse Theater for one hour before each performance and one half hour, or as long as people are leaving, afterwards. There is no cost to riders.
Cast and Crew
The
Opera on the James Board of Directors is proud to present the company’s inaugural stage production,
Leoncavallo’s tragic Italian opera,
Pagliacci. The two-act opera will be sung in Italian, with English supertitles, and stage directed by company artistic director,
Craig Fields. Maestro
Markand Thakar, music director of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the ensemble of players from the
Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and a cast of recognized singers from all over the country.
The cast includes tenor Drew Slatton as Canio, baritone William Andrew Stuckey as Tonio, baritone Robert Garner as Silvio, tenor Colyn Tvete as Beppe and Lynchburg soprano Marcia Jones Thom as Nedda.
The opera chorus will be prepared and conducted by Prof. Jong Kim, associate professor of music and director of choral activities at Lynchburg College. Thirteen Lynchburg College students (students of Dr. Kim) are performing in the opera chorus. Dorothy Smith of Charlottesville will design costumes and former Mill Mountain Theater set designer John Sailer of Roanoke will design and construct the sets.
