John Dooley is a native of Woodbridge, Virginia. Notable North American Premieres have included Ashmodeus (Tobias and the Angel) by Jonathan Dove with Opera Vivente and Frontino (LʼEquivoco stravagante) by Rossini with Bronx Opera. Other professional opera credits include Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte), Leporello, (Don Giovanni), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Count (The Marriage of Figaro), Marco (Gianni Schicchi/Buosoʼs Ghost), Dandini (Cinderella), Schaunard (La Bohème), Yamadori (Madama Butterfly), Falke (Die Fledermaus), Aeneas (Dido & Aeneas), Hermann (Les Contes DʼHoffmann), and Melchior (Amahl & the Night Visitors). He has performed with Central City Opera, Portland Opera, Tulsa Opera, Amarillo Opera, Lake George Opera, Opera Vivente, Bronx Opera, Cartersville Opera, Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia, Opera Fresca, Mendocino Concert Opera, Milton
Centre Series, Pacifica Performances, and Connecticut Early Music Festival.
No stranger to Musical Theatre, Mr. Dooley appeared in The Best of Sondheim concert with UtahSymphony opposite Faith Prince, Alice Ripley and Gregg Edelman. He was also a Soloist in HolidayMelody with Broadway at the Center and ʻSymphonic Popsʼ with The Columbia Orchestra. Other roles include Riff (West Side Story), Rolf Gruber & Captain Von Trapp (The Sound of Music), Olin Britt (The Music Man), Lieutenant Wright (The Secret Garden) Escamillo (Don Joseʼs Carmen) and Marcel (The Boyfriend) with Tulsa Opera, Ash Lawn Opera Festival, So. of Broadway Theatre Company, Vienna Choral Society, Arizona State Lyric Opera Theatre and at Quisisana Resort in Center Lovell, ME. He has also helped raise money for the Wounded Warriors Fund and the Virginia Lions Clubʼs Sight First II program through cabaret concert performances.
On the concert stage, Mr. Dooley has been a featured soloist in Brahmsʼ Ein Deutsches Requiem,
Beethovenʼs 9th Symphony, Handelʼs Messiah, Mozart Coronation Mass K. 317 and Regina Coeli K.276, Adolphus Hailstorkʼs Stages, and Bach Cantatas BMV 78 – Jesu, der du meine seele, BWV 192 – Nun danket alle Gott, and BWV 39 - Wohlzutun und mitzuteilen with such companies as Alexandria Symphony, Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra, Webster University Orchestra, Friday Morning Music Club Chorale, The Thomas Circle Singers and Towson Unitarian Universalist Church. Mr. Dooley received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from Arizona State University and has participated in many young artist programs/residencies across the country.
Most recently Mr. Dooley was selected Singer of the Year for 2009 from Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia. In 2004 Mr. Dooley was honored with the Gertrude Anderson Memorial Award from the Central City Opera House Association. In 2005 he was selected as an alternate in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Tulsa region. Mr. Dooley was a finalist in the Heinz Rehfuss singing actor competition and received the Classical Singer Award from the Audcomps competition in 2006. Upcoming engagements include Papageno in The Magic Flute with Opera Vivente, Soloist for Bach Cantata BWV 82 - Ich habe genug with Bay-Atlantic Symphony, Leporello in Don Giovanni at Quisisana Resort, Soloist in Handelʼs Messiah with Greensboro Oratorio Singers and guest soloist on Oceania Cruises to benefit Opera Vivente.
