Cecelia Schieve, General Director

Cecelia Schieve, General Director of Opera on the James in Lynchburg, Virginia since 2010, has to date nearly doubled main stage opera attendances, created Young Artist and Studio Artist Programs which present over sixty community programs yearly, and partnered with the Board of Directors to create an Opera Guild, Honorary Cabinet, Ambassadors Circle, and achieve a significant rise in annual donations. She is known in the industry for innovative programming, including the creation of a Hip-Hopera funded by Opera America, and is a passionate trainer and mentor of emerging professionals. Before coming to Lynchburg, Ms. Schieve was Director of the nationally acclaimed Young Artist and Education Program at Florida Grand Opera and Opera Education Consultant for the Miami-Dade School District, where she trained elementary school teachers to use opera to increase learning scores in standardized testing. Previous positions also include: Assistant General Director of Anchorage Opera where she created multiple cross-cultural programs and toured Young Artists into many First People’s communities; Executive Director of Brown Bag Opera, Boston; and Director of Opera at Boston Conservatory.  She has been Faculty/Guest Faculty at New England Conservatory, Longy School of Music, University of Wisconsin, University of Maryland, Kent State University, Georgia Southern University and Lynchburg College.

Ms. Schieve is a member of the Opera America Singer Training Forum, and has served as an adjudicator for NATS, MET Opera regional auditions, and Virginia Music Educators. She is an active master class instructor in dramatic presentation in diverse musical genres including opera, operetta, art song and oratorio. Her classes and coaching curriculums range from foundational training for younger students and their instructors, to “next steps” techniques for skilled artists already working towards a seamless connection between artist, character, text, music and audience.
